As I said in an email earlier, what an interesting day. Found out in the morning that there was a slow puncture in the rear tyre of the bicycle. Vigourous pumping meant it got me to the station and back, and I'll fix it on Saturday.

At work we had an extremely strongly foreshadowed round of redundancies in my group (I beg the company's pardon; we entered a consultancy period. A month's pay in lieu of notice sounds pretty redundant to me, however.) and lost about three-fifths - about 15 people. I am not one of them, by the way. Most of the people whose jobs have gone decided to leave immediately - they still have access to company HR for internal vacancies and other job-hunting help, though - and despite having known that this is near certain for a while, it wasn't at all clear who would stay and who go, so there was a rather shocked pub lunch for everyone. I did feel rather like Mr Collins condoling, but no-one seemed too unhappy.

The background is that the company lost a large contract (in a market which is shrinking rapidly) in January and about a third of the project team had already found other jobs since. Other teams in the company are expanding, and the people who are staying on to decommission the project should then move sideways. So an even more interesting next few months for me, and I get to learn about the exciting world of pensions. Joy.

Medium-term, I still want to move back up to Edinburgh, so I should get off my arse and look for jobs, shouldn't I?

Having re-inflated the tyre, sworn at the rain and put the bike away, I am making stew and drinking a mixture of chocolate vodka and hazelnut liqueur. Nutella at 40% abv; didn't ought to be allowed.
