Today's little epiphany: a saucepan with a pasta insert is not very good for making pasta (you want the pasta, not the water, so a colander is the better tool) - but it's fucking excellent for boiling up a stock: after it's boiled long enough, lift out the insert and get rid of 95% of the bones and veg in one simple motion.
