Jul. 22nd, 2008 02:50 pmWhy did no-one tell me about Ithaca? This is a fucking excellent town - there are magnificent lakes and creeks and waterfalls, Dynkin and Thurston are both still in the math department at Cornell (dude! William Thurston! I had a brief fanboy moment when I saw his name on the staff list...), it has hills and trees and a nice little downtown area. I'm having to work quite hard to stop myself from planning to move here. It's too cold in January, and too hot in August, I tell myself desperately.
In other news, not much. Got mosquito bites picking raspberries in the sun, which is pretty much my Platonic ideal of a summer holiday but I wish the bites didn't itch so much. Also it is raining quite a lot. And I've just realised that under my usual convention of using initials for non-lj people, I'm staying with A. and B., which is amusing. B is doing well, having gone through maths and computer science to end up in electronic engineering. Met A for the first time this trip and she's charming and smart and so on and so forth - they seem very happy, and have a nice apartment (with vast amounts of wooden panelling) in a clapperboard house.
