When I got out of the train station and found my bike this evening, there was ice on the seat (a couple of mm thick in places, and showing a dry rather than damp surface) and liquid water on the rest of the frame.
My first thought was that there was a temperature difference between air a metre up and air near the ground; but there was liquid water on the handlebars, and on the seatpost, so this didn't seem tenable.
My second thought was that the metal frame leaning against a metal stanchion had a good conductive path to ground temperature, while the surface of the seat was separated from the frame by an insulating layer and was tending to air temperature instead.
My third thought was that this was an utterly splendid thing for the world to have surprised me with, and it made me happy.
My fourth thought, after I got home and put the bike away, was that my perineum was fucking freezing...
