The finest bad novel I have read this year is The Lancashire Witches by William Harrison Ainsworth. This novel shows James the Sixth and First knighting a loin of beef. It is suberbly melodramatic, ahistorical, incoherent and false. If you gritted your teeth at Ivanhoe, you'll be pleading for the nitrous oxide during this. I cannot recommend it too highly.
